Why do we teach Music?
At Bluecoat Primary the intention of the Music Curriculum is to ensure every child begins to develop the skills and knowledge they need to be lifelong music learners. Every child will have access to High Quality music making, where every lesson is steeped in practical musicianship. Alongside building musical skills, every child will engage with powerful music knowledge. Through musical performance on instruments, as well as singing and composing activities, students will develop their innate musical abilities and will learn how to describe and evaluate the music they are interacting with. Students interact with musical composers and works from a wide range of styles and genres and learn to critically evaluate and analyse the music they are interacting with through the language of the elements of music. Music lessons will celebrate the creativity and individuality of each child, bringing them into contact with wider cultural, social and historical musical issues. We know that music making has the unique ability to include everyone in a common goal supporting children’s developing social and citizenship skills. Students will also develop important transferrable skills whilst they study music, such as self–confidence, teamwork skills, communication, and resilience.
