Mental Health and Wellbeing

Supporting Well-Being and Mental Health at Bluecoat Primary Academy

At Bluecoat Primary, supporting the well-being and mental health of our children is extremely important to us. That’s why “Health” is one of our seven key character traits. We make sure every child understands the importance of looking after their physical and mental health, so by the time they leave us, they are strong and confident in both body and mind.

Mind

Understanding the importance of a balanced diet and nutritious foods, and how they fuel our bodies and minds.
Recognizing the significance of regular exercise for maintaining physical and mental well-being.
Emphasizing that happiness positively impacts mental health, encouraging practices that promote joy and contentment.
Encouraging resilience to help students overcome setbacks and low moods with confidence and strength.
Teaching the importance of having hobbies that bring happiness and dedication,
recognizing that pursuing interests and passions contributes to overall health.

Body

Teaching good personal hygiene habits to keep students clean and healthy.
Understanding the significance of a good sleep routine for overall well-being.
Educating about road safety and water safety and how to protect themselves in various environments.
Emphasizing the importance of online safety to protect themselves in digital spaces

Soul

Promoting healthy relationships as crucial for providing safety, support, and a sense of belonging.
Encouraging practices that nurture self-care, ensuring students know how to look after their physical and emotional needs.
Instilling the understanding of danger and how to stay safe in various situations.

We know that some children may face extra challenges, like caring for family members or going through tough experiences that can make learning harder. We are here to support those children and help them feel safe and cared for. Whether it’s providing extra support in class or offering someone to talk to, we make sure all our children get the care they need. At Bluecoat, we believe that when children’s well-being is looked after, they can achieve their best and be the best version of themselves.

Miss K Brown

Designated Safeguarding Lead & Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion and Young Carers Champion

At Bluecoat Primary Academy, we understand the unique challenges faced by young carers, who are children and young people under the age of 25 providing regular care to a family member with a physical or mental illness, disability, or substance misuse issue. These young people often juggle their caring responsibilities with their education, which can impact their well-being and academic performance. We are committed to supporting these young carers by offering a range of services and a nurturing environment to ensure their emotional, social, and educational needs are met. Through regular communication with families, dedicated staff support, and access to specialist services, we aim to reduce the stress young carers experience. Our school provides opportunities for young carers to participate in extra-curricular activities, where they can build friendships and gain support from peers. By creating a compassionate and understanding environment, we ensure that young carers at Bluecoat Primary Academy are empowered to thrive both at school and at home.

A young carer is someone aged 25 and under who cares for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support. Older young carers are also known as young adult carers and they may have different support needs to younger carers.

What might a young carer do?

  • Practical tasks, like cooking, housework and shopping.

  • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.

  • Emotional support, including talking to someone who is distressed.

  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress.

  • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.

  • Helping to give medicine.

  • Helping someone communicate.

  • Looking after brothers and sisters.

  • Young carers are already likely to have significantly lower educational attainment than their peers.

  • With the added complications of COVID-19, young carers have missed out on even more school than before and urgent support is needed if they are not to be left behind their peers.

  • Caring can also be an isolating experience but having the right support in place can give young carers a better chance  of succeeding in all parts of their lives.
