Healing Hearts: Supporting Pupils Through Grief and Loss

At Bluecoat Primary Academy, we are proud to be leading the way in delivering compassionate and forward-thinking education around bereavement, grief, and loss. As part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child, we have introduced a pioneering programme titled “Healing Hearts: Navigating Bereavement, Grief and Loss”, designed to support our Year 5 pupils and any child who has experienced bereavement.

Developed in collaboration with A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service and supported by the Archway Learning Trust, these lessons equip children with the emotional tools to understand and manage grief in a safe, age-appropriate way. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, express feelings, and explore healthy coping strategies, all under the guidance of trained mental health mentors.

Our work has received national recognition, with coverage from both the BBC and the Nottingham Post, highlighting our role in shaping a more open and supportive approach to grief education in schools. We are proud to have contributed to a wider campaign that has now led to the inclusion of bereavement education in the national curriculum for Key Stage 2 and 3.

As Head of School, Mr Benjamin Jackson shared:

“We’re proud to be leading the way and hope our work inspires other educators to support children through life’s most difficult moments.”
