Pastoral Pathways at Bluecoat Primary Academy

At Bluecoat Primary Academy, our pastoral pathways are a vital part of our commitment to supporting every child holistically. We recognise that children thrive when their emotional, behavioural, and learning needs are met with care, consistency, and expertise. To ensure this, we have developed three distinct but interconnected pathways:

  • Behaviour Pathway
  • Mental Health Pathway
  • SEND Pathway

Each pathway is underpinned by our Pastoral Pyramid Model, which outlines four tiers of provision:

Behaviour Pathway

Our Behaviour Pathway is designed to support both children and teaching staff in promoting positive behaviour and addressing challenges effectively. It includes:

  • Universal Provision: Core behaviour expectations and positive reinforcement strategies used by all staff.
  • Universal Plus: Additional support from Key Stage Leaders, including tracking, observations, and parental engagement.
  • Targeted Provision: Behaviour Support Plans with SMART targets led by Behaviour Learning Mentors (BLMs), supported by SENCo and reviewed regularly.
  • Specialist Provision: Involvement of external agencies and SEN strategies coordinated by the SENCo.

This pathway ensures that behaviour is managed proactively, with clear systems for escalation and support.

SEND Pathway

Our SEND Pathway ensures that children with additional needs receive the support they require to access learning and thrive. It includes:

  • Universal Provision: Inclusive teaching strategies and classroom adaptations.
  • Universal Plus: SENCo-led observations and early identification processes.
  • Targeted Provision: Individual support plans, small group interventions, and regular reviews.
  • Specialist Provision: EHCPs, multi-agency involvement, and specialist teaching support.

This pathway ensures that SEND provision is embedded across the school and responsive to individual needs.

Mental Health Pathway

Our Mental Health Pathway focuses on emotional wellbeing and resilience. It includes:

  • Universal Provision: Whole-school approaches to wellbeing, including PSHE, assemblies, and staff awareness.
  • Universal Plus: Support from pastoral staff and Key Stage Leaders for children showing early signs of emotional distress.
  • Targeted Provision: Interventions such as ELSA, mentoring, and structured emotional support programmes.
  • Specialist Provision: Referrals to external mental health services and bespoke support plans coordinated by the SENCo and safeguarding team.

This pathway ensures that children’s mental health is supported at every level, with timely and appropriate interventions.
