Safeguarding & National Pastoral Events in the PSHE Curriculum
At Bluecoat Primary Academy, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. This appendix to our PSHE progression document is designed to support class teachers in planning and delivering lessons that are not only informative but also deeply relevant to the lived experiences of our pupils.
Teachers are encouraged to review this appendix at the start of each term and throughout the term, ensuring that PSHE lessons are thoughtfully contextualised and responsive to the needs of our school community.
To help bring safeguarding to life through the curriculum, we use the following approaches:
- Invite key staff such as our BLM or DSLs into lessons to provide bespoke support and insight.
- Be sensitive to individual pupil experiences, adapting content where necessary to ensure it is delivered with care and empathy.
- Use anonymised real-life examples and case studies from our school to make learning more relatable and impactful.
- Reinforce whole-school language and routines, embedding consistent safeguarding messages across all year groups.
- Focus on key priorities, such as protected characteristics, mental health, and fundamental British values.
- Signpost support and provide resources for issues that are particularly relevant to our pupils.
By embedding safeguarding meaningfully into our PSHE curriculum, we aim to empower our children with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to thrive.
