The Bluecoat Primary Academy Transition Journey
A Seamless Journey from Nursery to Secondary School
At Bluecoat Primary Academy, we believe that transition is not an event, it is a journey. From a child’s very first experience with us in Nursery through to their move to Secondary School, we carefully plan and nurture every stage of transition to ensure children feel safe, confident, excited, and ready for the next step in their educational journey.

Beginning the Journey: Nursery
Our transition journey begins long before a child starts school. We warmly welcome prospective Nursery children and their families through our Nursery Tea and Welcome Meeting, providing an opportunity for children and parents to meet staff, explore the environment, and begin building relationships with the Bluecoat community.
We also host Stay and Play sessions on Saturdays throughout the year, which are open to all local families considering Bluecoat Primary Academy. These sessions allow children to explore our learning environment alongside their parents, helping them become familiar with our setting in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
At the start of the academic year, every Nursery child receives a home visit from their Nursery Teacher and Teaching Assistant. These visits are a vital part of our transition process, enabling us to build strong relationships with families, understand children’s interests and needs, and demonstrate that school and home work together as one team. Children often take great comfort in seeing their teacher within their home environment, helping to establish trust and familiarity before their first day.
Children begin Nursery on a part-time basis, attending either morning or afternoon sessions before gradually increasing to full-time attendance. This gentle and carefully planned start supports children in settling confidently into school life.

Transitioning into Reception
Many of our Nursery children already know our environment, staff, and routines, making their transition into Reception particularly smooth. However, we also welcome a significant number of children from other settings each year and ensure they experience the same high-quality transition process.
Prospective Reception families are invited to attend Stay and Play sessions throughout the year, allowing children and parents to explore our Early Years environment together. During these sessions, families meet staff, build relationships, and begin to feel part of the Bluecoat family.
Parents attend a Reception Welcome Meeting where we share information about the curriculum, daily routines, expectations, and how we support children throughout their transition into school.
Children then participate in additional Stay and Play sessions where they spend time within the Reception environment alongside their families. These opportunities allow staff to begin forming relationships with children and support the careful allocation of classes.
Before the summer break, children attend dedicated transition sessions with their new classmates and teachers. To further strengthen relationships, Reception teachers conduct home visits for all new pupils, providing another valuable opportunity to get to know children and their families. Children are also given a special transition pack to support excitement and readiness over the summer holiday.
In September, Reception children begin with a phased start before moving to full-time attendance. During the first six weeks, staff undertake baseline assessments whilst prioritising relationship-building and ensuring every child feels secure, happy, and settled.
Moving Through Primary School
At Bluecoat Primary Academy, transition continues throughout a child’s school life.
As children move from Reception into Year 1, parents are invited to attend a Key Stage 1 Transition Meeting where leaders explain how learning develops beyond Early Years. While expectations increase, we maintain aspects of continuous provision and child-led learning to ensure a smooth and developmentally appropriate transition.
Across the school, all children from Reception to Year 6 participate in dedicated transition afternoons with their current teacher before moving to meet their new teacher and explore their new classroom. This allows children to experience change with the reassurance of familiar adults alongside them.
One of the most successful aspects of our transition programme is our three-day move-up experience. During the final three days of the academic year, all children spend time with their new teacher, in their new classroom, following their new routines. Parents begin dropping off and collecting from new locations, ensuring that children and families enter the summer holiday feeling secure, prepared, and confident about September.
This approach significantly reduces anxiety and allows children to return after the summer ready to learn from day one.

Key Stage Transitions
Transition between key stages is carefully planned and supported.
As children move from Year 2 into Year 3, families attend a Lower Key Stage 2 Transition Meeting where leaders explain the changes children will experience. Recognising that Year 3 involves moving to a different part of the building and increased independence, we continue opportunities such as Relax and Read sessions, allowing parents to remain connected to classroom life and helping children maintain confidence as they move upstairs.
Similarly, as children move from Year 5 into Year 6, families attend information sessions outlining expectations, preparation for statutory assessments, increasing independence, and the leadership opportunities available during their final year at primary school.
Preparing for Secondary School
Transition to Secondary School is a key milestone and one we take great pride in supporting.
Throughout their time at Bluecoat Primary Academy, children develop links with local secondary schools through visits, workshops, performances, and curriculum experiences. Many of our pupils become familiar with secondary environments long before Year 6.
In Year 6, transition planning intensifies. Staff work closely with secondary schools through Nottingham City’s transition systems, ensuring detailed information is shared to support continuity of learning, wellbeing, and safeguarding.
Children attend formal transition days at their secondary schools and meet key staff before starting in September. As part of our strong partnership working, secondary school leaders, including Principals and pastoral teams, are invited into Bluecoat Primary Academy to meet pupils and answer questions.
For vulnerable pupils, including those with SEND, previously looked after children, and looked after children, we provide enhanced transition support. Additional visits, bespoke transition plans, and personalised programmes ensure every child receives the support they need to thrive.
Our SENDCo works closely with families, external agencies, and secondary school SEND teams to ensure all necessary information, strategies, and support plans are in place well before transition takes place.

Beyond Bluecoat
Our commitment to children does not end when they leave Year 6.
Following transition to Secondary School, senior leaders, safeguarding staff, and our SENDCo maintain communication with receiving schools and monitor how our most vulnerable pupils are settling into their new environments. We take great pride in seeing our pupils continue to flourish and remain part of the wider Bluecoat family.
Supporting In-Year Admissions
We recognise that some children join Bluecoat Primary Academy during the school year. Every in-year admission receives the same high-quality transition support.
Families are welcomed for a personalised tour led by a senior leader. Children are shown key areas of the school, introduced to staff and classmates, and supported in understanding routines and expectations before their start date.
Staff work closely with previous schools to gather information regarding learning, safeguarding, SEND, attendance, and wellbeing, ensuring that every child receives a personalised and supportive transition experience.

Our Commitment
At Bluecoat Primary Academy, transition is about much more than moving classes or changing schools. It is about building relationships, reducing anxiety, creating belonging, and ensuring every child feels known, valued, and supported.
From Nursery to Secondary School and every step in between, we are committed to providing a carefully planned, nurturing, and highly effective transition journey that enables every child to thrive.
